The Principality of Hutt River, often referred to by its former name—Hutt River Province—is one of the more notorious micronations in Australia. It was founded by Leonard Casley and came out of a protest against a wheat quota by the Australian government. A few years later Casley named himself Prince Leonard in reference to a British Treason Act of 1495 as an attempt to give his claim more weight. When Prince Leonard died in February 2019, a US$2.15 million tax bill was left. This forced his son and successor, Prince Graeme Casley, to announce in August 2020 that the principality would sell its land to pay the debt. A reign of fifty years ends.
